The Flohburg is a Gothic half-timbered house in Nordhausen in Thuringia and one of the oldest and most valuable buildings in the city. It has a richly structured facade with a steep gable roof. At the end of June 2012, the Flohburg - The Nordhausen Museum was opened here.

history

In 1336 the property was owned by the respected aristocratic Bart family and was used as shelters. According to dendrochronological investigations, today's Flohburg has existed since 1473/74. A deep cellar comes from the 11th / 12th. Century and is probably unique in Hesse, Lower Saxony and Thuringia. The most representative room in the house was the Bohlenstube from 1506, which is considered important in terms of culture and art history.

Extensive renovations and additions to the building took place up to the 19th century; At that time it housed a butcher's shop, a bakery, an inn and a coppersmith's shop. The first Nordhausen theater was located in the building until 1989 . In 1963 the Flohburg was used as a library for children and young people and an extension to the east was built. From 2002 the house was used for special cultural and historical exhibitions.

At the beginning of 2011, extensive renovation and expansion of the Flohburg began; the historic building was gutted, extensions from GDR times removed and the roof renewed. The costs for the entire project amounted to around 5.2 million euros, with the city of Nordhausen contributing 1.3 million of its own funds. The City History Museum opened on June 30, 2012. The Himmelgarten library has been located in the Flohburg since 2014 .

Surname

There are different meanings for the name “Flohburg”; On the one hand, it could stem from the small apartments with their many residents, on the other hand, from the poor hygienic conditions in the building.
