history

During a stay in Florence, the violinist Jean Becker was commissioned to conduct ten subscription concerts of the Association for the Elevation and Promotion of Italian Chamber Music under the patronage of the wealthy Florentine professor Abramo Basevi (1818–1885). After thorough interplay studies, the "Florentine Quartet Jean Becker" began to travel to Switzerland and Strasbourg in 1866, then to Frankfurt, Cologne, Leipzig, Berlin, Dresden and Baden-Baden in 1867. Before the quartet arrived in Vienna in 1868, the Joachimsche and Hellmesberger quartet had already covered the field of chamber music. After word of the quality of the musicians got around, ten more concerts were given with great success. In 1874 Friedrich Hilpert left the quartet to work in Vienna. Louis Hegyesi took his place.
