The Floriade is a flower and entertainment festival held annually in Canberra's Commonwealth Park . Lush flower arrangements, sculptures and other works of art are on display. The Floriade attracts tourists from all over Australia and overseas in spring from mid-September to mid-October . The festival is considered the main regular tourist event in the Australian Capital Territory .

The Floriade was held for the first time in 1988, in connection with the 75th anniversary of the founding of the city and the 200th anniversary of the European settlement of Australia. The event turned out to be a great success and has taken place every year since then under a different motto. With around 300,000 visitors each, the Floriade is the largest garden show in the southern hemisphere.

The organizers pay special attention to art exhibitions. Every year new works of art are commissioned, which are distributed over the entire site and in some cases remain there permanently after the exhibition. The design competition for garden gnomes is particularly popular . Schools, retirement homes and companies design these according to a given topic.
