Florida Power & Light Corporation ( FPL ) is an American energy company. Florida Power & Light is a subsidiary of S&P 500- listed NextEra Energy , Inc.

FPL was founded in Florida in 1925 and supplies energy to around 4.5 million customers in Florida.

Power plants and nuclear power

The company owns 83 plants that use fossil fuels to generate electricity, which in 2007 accounted for two thirds of the total energy produced.

FPL is the largest shareholder and operator of the two nuclear power plants Saint Lucie and Turkey Point in Florida, each with two reactors and a total capacity of 2,939 MW ; by 2012 this is to be increased by 400 MW.

In October 2007, applications were made to build two more reactors in Turkey Point with a total output of between 2,200 and 3,040 MW. The reactors should be completed between 2018 and 2020. It was announced in January 2010 that the planning of the Turkey Point-6 and 7 reactors had been discontinued.
