The NextEra Energy, Inc. (to May 2010, FPL Group, Inc. ) is a S & P 500 -listed American energy company based in Juno Beach , Florida . Its history goes back to 1925.

NextEra Energy operates through three subsidiaries in 27 US states and claims to be a leader in solar and wind energy in the United States.

A total of 8.7 million people on the east coast and Florida are supplied with electricity. The total power plant capacity is 37,500 megawatts .

On June 20, 2005, FPL acquired Gexa Energy of Houston, Texas.

In May 2010 the name was changed to NextEra Energy, Inc.

FPL is the operator of the Solar Energy Generating System in California.

Wind turbines

Furthermore, FPL is one of the largest owners of wind turbines worldwide. The company owns 47 wind farms in 15 US states with a capacity of 4,002 megawatts. This capacity is sufficient to supply around one million average US households. As of July 2005, FPL has installed around 880 megawatts of wind power in the United States and has another 220 megawatts under construction. In Taylor County, Texas, it operates the Horse Hollow Wind Energy Center , the largest wind farm in the USA.
