Rummelplatz der Liebe (working title: Rummelplatz ) is a feature film that was made in a German-American co-production in 1953/54. It was premiered at the 1954 Berlinale .

action

Lilli is broke. The young, pretty woman is caught stealing by Toni, the manager of a showman. He takes advantage of the situation to seduce her and brings her to a circus with which she is to travel from now on. The daring trapeze artist Franz works at this circus. Lilli falls in love with Franz and marries him. But Toni also feels more than just collegial friendship for Lilli. He chases after her and continues to act as a good advisor to the naive Lilli. Lilli is a slave to the counselor and he takes advantage of the girl. Toni, however, wants to be more than just Lilli's fatherly friend. His jealousy of Franz finally leads him to loosen the ladder rungs of the diving tower, so that Franz falls and dies. The police consider the murder to be an accident. Toni confesses to Lilli that he is the author of her husband's death. However, the murder of Franz destroys the relationship with Lilli, who suddenly recognizes the real person behind the good facade. Toni dies on the Ferris wheel and Lilli can now start a new life.

background

The film was produced in the Bavaria Film studio in Geiselgasteig . The outdoor shots were taken on the Maxburg site in Munich, Garmisch and at Tegernsee . Ted Haworth , Hanns H. Kuhnert and Theo Zwierski created the buildings, Arthur Siteman and Herbert Junghanns were production managers . The ferris wheel , on which the decisive duel takes place in the final scene, is still in operation today. A German and an American version of the film were produced under the title The Carnival Story .

The world premiere of the German version took place in June 1954 during the Berlinale 1954 in the Berlin Waldbühne in front of 25,000 spectators. However, the film failed the audience and was mercilessly whistled. The Berlin audience immediately created an alternative, ironic title: Fummelplatz der Liebe . Nevertheless, the film was also shown at the Locarno Festival in July 1954 . On August 20, 1954, it was mass-launched in German cinemas.

Eva Bartok and Curd Jürgens were considered one of the dream couples in German film in the mid-1950s. One year after the premiere of the joint film, Eva Bartok and Curd Jürgens married. However, the marriage was divorced a year later.

Director Kurt Neumann had already premiered his American version of this film in April 1954 under the title Carnival Story in Hollywood. Here the female lead was played by Anne Baxter , who has a cameo in Rummelplatz der Liebe . The male lead played Steve Cochran .
