The muzzle ( lat. Planum nasolabiale ) is the fusion of the nasal entrance and upper lip in cattle .

The muzzle has by shallow grooves delimited, polygonal (polygonal) fields (areae) with a diameter of 2 to 4. mm. Similar to a fingerprint , this field is an individual identifier.

The epidermis (upper skin) is thickened in the area of ​​the mouth. In the dermis (dermis) there are compact beds of serous glands (muzzle glands ) , which open into small pits (foveolae) in the area of ​​the muzzle fields. Except for a few individual sinus hairs , the skin is hairless.
