The air defense missile battalion 23 (FlaRakBtl 23) was an association of Air Force for air defense , the 1962 to 1993 at various locations in Germany stationed and finally the anti-aircraft missile command 4 was assumed (FlaRakKdo 4). It was equipped at various times with the main weapon systems Nike Hercules with nuclear warheads and later with the MIM-104 Patriot .
The battalion maintained Nike launching areas in Albach , Schöneck , Kemel and Obersayn . The modernization carried out from 1987 and the replacement of the main weapon systems by the mobile Patriot system eliminated the need for fixed firing positions. These were returned to the communities in the following years.
With the abandonment of the Albach site and the reorganization of FlaRakG 4 , the battalion was dissolved in 1993.
