history

For the Roman past of the Kemel area, see also the separate articles Small fort “Auf dem Pohl bei Kemel” and Kemel fort .

Kemel was first mentioned in a document in 812. In 983 Emperor Otto II donated a royal court in Kemel to the diocese of Mainz . The place is located on a road from the Rhine to the Lahn that was used in prehistoric times and crosses the Taunus here. In Roman times there was a fort here and the Limes ran nearby. In the Middle Ages , the Taunus crossing was part of the important trade route from Aachen to Nuremberg . The Counts of Katzenelnbogen ruled as Mainz bailiffs . After their extinction, the place came to the Landgraviate of Hesse in 1479 , in 1815, after a few years of French rule, to the Duchy of Nassau and became Prussian in 1866 . Many small villages in the area shared the fate of Kemel.

As part of the regional reform in Hesse , the municipality of Kemel merged with 15 other municipalities on December 31, 1971 on a voluntary basis to form the municipality of Heidenrod . For Kemel, as for all other districts, a local district with a local advisory council and a local mayor was set up.
