With almost 2000 inhabitants, Laufenselden is the largest district and at the same time the seat of the municipal administration of Heidenrod in the Rheingau-Taunus district in southern Hesse , the most densely wooded municipality in Hesse .

geography

Laufenselden is located in the Taunus (western Hintertaunus ) in an approximately round deforested island on the Dörsbach , which here on the run north to the Lahn through the western Hintertaunus takes up three side valleys from the left and forms an enlarged valley basin. With around 2100 hectares, the Laufenselden district is by far the largest in the Heidenrod municipal area.

The Graue Kopf rises three kilometers west of Laufenselden , at 543  m above sea level. NN , the second highest mountain in the western Hintertaunus. This ridge stretches in a northeasterly direction and is intended to be the Hahnkopf ( 429  m above sea  level ), the last branch. The Schönauer Küppel ( 459  m above sea  level ) rises southwest of the village and the Bernsterkopf ( 445  m above sea  level ) to the south . In the east the district extends to the Aar and includes the deserted Riels Mühle and in the northeast the Neumühle on the 287 m long Laufenselden tunnel of the Aartalbahn . Laufenselden is the northernmost of the 19 districts of Heidenrod and borders the state border with Rhineland-Palatinate from northwest to northeast . The Upper German-Raetian Limes ran through the south and west of the district . In the south, the small fort "Auf dem Dörsterberg" above the Dörsbach has been identified as a ground monument . To the north-west of the village, just across the border, was the former Holzhausen fort .

The closest localities are Huppert in the south, Langschied and Egenroth in the southwest, Grebenroth , Martenroth and Holzhausen an der Haide in the west, Rettert and Berndroth in the northwest, Reckenroth and Michelbach in the northeast and Burg-Hohenstein in the southeast.

Evangelical Church in Laufenselden

Laufenselden was first mentioned in a document in 1260 under the name Loifenselden. The place belonged to the Niedergrafschaft Katzenelnbogen . In 1360 Laufenselden received town and market rights . In the years 1806–1813, Laufenselden and the Lower County of Katzenelnbogen were under French administration . In 1816 the village belongs to the Duchy of Nassau .

From 1919 to 1923 Laufenselden was the central geographical point of the Free State of Bottleneck , a narrow strip of land that was cut off from the rest of the Weimar Republic in terms of traffic and had to be self-sufficient.

After the Second World War, Laufenselden was in the American zone of occupation.

On June 26, 1969, a plane crash occurred a few hundred meters from Laufenselden, in which the pilot was killed. The Belgian sub-lieutenant Roger Louis Joseph Marquillier took off with his RF-84F-25-RE Thunderflash tactical reconnaissance aircraft as part of the Sky Blue exercise in Florennes that morning . At 10:10 a.m., the plane brushed the treetops at low altitude and then collided with the terrain. The plane crashed, the debris was scattered over an area of ​​many hundreds of square meters. A memorial stone in the forest commemorates the accident.

In the course of the regional reform in Hesse , the municipality of Laufenselden merged with 15 other municipalities on December 31, 1971 on a voluntary basis to form the municipality of Heidenrod . For Laufenselden, as for all other districts, a local district with a local advisory board and local council was set up.

There is a Catholic and a Protestant church in the village. The synagogue, built in 1861, was destroyed by arson in 1938 and no longer exists today. The Jewish cemetery in Laufenselden dates from the 18th century.

Regular events

The Fahlerkerb takes place every three years on the first two weekends in August . The celebration of the consecration of the church in Rettert has been celebrated for over 600 years and is now known nationwide.

Every year an old pagan custom to drive out winter takes place in Laufenselden, which is called "Schnook". The Schnook, a man who is wrapped in ferns, goes with his beech whips wearing beech whips and shouting "Schnook" loudly through Laufenselden to collect money and eggs.

The traditional Krammarkt takes place every first Tuesday in May; as a "remnant" of the market rights granted in the Middle Ages.
