The Spriggs Payne Airport is the second largest airport of Monrovia , capital of the West African Republic of Liberia and is conveniently located in the southeast Congo Town . The airfield was built in the reign of President William S. Tubman and named after the fourth President of Liberia, James Spriggs Payne . The largest airport in the country is Roberts International Airport Monrovia .
history
Air traffic in Liberia began in the 1930s with the establishment of airmail air services along the African coast. During the Second World War , Liberia became important as a hub in the supply logistics of the US troops in North Africa. For this purpose, Thomas Jefferson Airfield , located on the Firestone Company premises, was expanded as a military airfield.
After the end of the war, the Firestone Company urged the return of this airport, which was returned to civil use and renamed "Roberts Airfield". The Liberian government was angry and ordered the construction of Spriggs Payne Airport on the eastern outskirts of Monrovia. This was now preferred by the newly created Liberian National Airways . Both airports achieved economic gains in the 1960s, and a dense network of domestic airlines to the country's mining centers was formed, although small aircraft were the preferred choice.
