The Skikda Airport was an airport in Algeria . The airfield is located about 4 km east of the city of Skikda (Philippeville in French times), a port city in northeast Algeria on the Bay of Stora.
history
During World War II, the airfield was set up as a large US air force base for operations in the North African campaign against the German Africa Corps . Anglo-American troops landed there on November 8, 1942 ( Operation Torch ). The 310th Bombardment Group flew B-25 bombers from the airfield in 1943. The military name was Philippeville Airfield .
The airfield has not been in operation for many years; the area is used as a tank storage facility for the petrochemical and gas industry (zone Pétrochimique), building materials and other goods. It is not known exactly when flight operations ceased, probably after Algeria became independent from France in 1962.
