The air accident of Aviogenex in Libreville took place on April 2, 1977. On that day, crashed one set with 8 passenger Tupolev Tu-134 A-1, with an intercontinental charter cargo flight of the Yugoslav airline Aviogenex from the airport Frankfurt to Libreville was carried out in Gabon . Shortly before landing, the machine crashed after an unplanned ground contact , killing all eight people on board the machine.

machine

The affected machine was a Tupolev Tu-134A-1 built in 1976, which had the factory number 6348370 and the model serial number 35-01 . The machine was delivered new to Aviogenex in 1976 and approved by Aviogenex with the aircraft registration YU-AJS . The twin short-range narrow-body aircraft was equipped with two Turbojettriebwerken type Solowjow D-30 II equipped.

Inmates and cargo

There were eight occupants on board the machine, six of whom were crew members and two replacement pilots flying along as passengers. Although there was no Tupolev Tu-134 in a configuration as a cargo aircraft, the machine was flown on a makeshift cargo flight that day. The Tupolev had loaded meat products that were to be flown from Frankfurt am Main to the Gabonese capital Libreville .

the accident

Cockpit of a Tupolev Tu-134A

After a flight without any particular incident, the crew of the Tu-134 flew to Libreville Airport with good visibility. Shortly before the planned landing, the pilots noticed that the runway on which they wanted to land was occupied. A Boeing 707 from another airline backed up on the runway. As it turned out later, the Boeing crew had initially traveled on a taxiway. Since there was no way to turn with the machine, it was decided to change lanes. The air traffic controller did not warn the crew of the Tu-134 that the runway was occupied. The master of the Tu-134 initiated a go- around . Under the difficult conditions due to the rain pounding continuously on the windshield, the tension and tiredness of the crew after the long flight from Europe and due to the unexpectedly necessary second approach, the captain made a mistake while going through: he tore the steering column with a hasty hand movement, as a result of which the machine swerved in the next instant. She touched a 60-meter-high baobab tree that had grown along the approach baseline and, due to its enormous height, was even recorded on the approach charts for Libreville. The machine then crashed, killing all eight occupants.
