In Austria, land consolidation is understood to be a “smaller” procedure compared to amalgamation (which in turn is similar to what is known as land consolidation in Germany ).

In principle, the procedure is the same as for the merger, but a smaller area is affected or relatively few landowners are involved in the process. It can also be a kind of interim solution up to a larger (merging) procedure.

The only legal difference on the merger is: In place of the Agricultural Authority adopted regulations (for example, the initiation and conclusion of the proceedings and the reasons and the dissolution of the merger community) take decisions .

The community of landowners in the land consolidation process is consequently also called the "land consolidation community".
