The Fn key is a special key that is particularly found on notebooks or netbooks . "Fn" stands for "function" or "function" in English. This key can be used to reach a manufacturer-specific level, comparable to the Alt key or control key . The function key has no combinations with the Shift , Alt or Control key .

Usual use

In almost every notebook that does not have a separate number pad , the Fn key switches a block to the function of the number pad. This block is usually located in the right area , similar to normal keyboards , whereby the keys are usually letter keys. Most of the time, the row of function keys also offers the option of controlling the screen brightness, selecting the video output and other things.

The setting whether additional functions can be activated using the Fn key or using the keys F1to F12is made in the BIOS (UEFI) menu.

Position of the Fn key

The position of the Fn key varies depending on the manufacturer and model: usually to the right of the left Ctrl key, or alternatively in the lower left corner of the keyboard.

Using the Fn Functions with a Regular Keyboard

If a keyboard is connected to a notebook without the Fn key, the key combination Strg+ Alt+ F1to can sometimes be used to F12activate the respective function.

Release the engaged Fn key

When the Fn key is engaged, there are several ways to release it.

  • On the one hand, this would be the combination Strg+ Shift+ Num.
  • For many other models it is the combination Fn+ Num. Sometimes it is enough to simply Numpress.
  • or Fn+F11
  • If Shifta small Fn ↓ is shown on the key , it works with Fn+ Shift(be careful: the order is important: Shift+ Fnmay not work).
  • In rare cases, there is similar to the shift lock (caps lock) a button Fn Lock.
