Fogou from Piskey's Hall

Piskey's Hall

The Fogou of Piskey's Hall (also called The Fairy's Fogou, Pixie's Hall or Trewardreva ) - is a "stone built" basement (regionally called Fogou ) in Cornwall , England . In the case of the basement, a basic distinction is made between "rock-cut", "earth-cut", "stone built" and "mixed" basements.

The Fogou is about 1.6 km north of Constantine and 100 m southeast of a back road opposite the entrance to Farm Trewardreva Hall. The constitution is not entirely underground. In the area there is a hump the length of the corridor. The location of the original entrance is unknown, but analogous to the better preserved Fogous, this would be a narrow creeper. Today's redesigned access is via the open south-west end.

The preserved covered part of Fogou is a straight, over 8.0 m long corridor with a low opening at the northeast end, which was partially blocked with stones. The construction of the Fogou is abnormal. The other eight remaining Fogous of the region have a trapezoidal cross-section, with the wall spacing gradually tapering towards the roof to reduce the spacing for the ceiling structure. At Piskey's Hall the walls are almost vertical. Due to the large cross-section, nine very large stones were used to cover the roof. The stones at the ends of the corridor are particularly massive. Immediately behind the large capstone at the northeast end are three very slender, lighter and significantly lighter stones that can be modern replacements.

The name

Pixies (also Pixy, pinkie, Pinkies and Piskey's (in Cornish)) are mythical beings of folklore, particularly concentrated in the raised bog areas of Cornwall and Devon, suggesting that the name and origin for the belief is Celtic .
