Forgotten Empires started as a loose developer community, they programmed The Forgotten Mod for Age of Empires II. After Microsoft announced that the modding team should help with the programming of the HD Edition and the add-on The Forgotten, the developer studio was founded. Age of Empires II: HD Edition and the published add-ons were then programmed together with Hidden Path Entertainment and SkyBox Labs .
