The Forlenbuckel is a ground monument near Ubstadt-Weiher in Baden-Württemberg . The name of about seven meters high inland dune comes from the popularly as Forlen designated pines ago that were previously on the top.

Emergence

The Forlen hump was created by drifting sand drifting in the last ice age. Such inland dunes occur in Baden-Württemberg only on the edges of the Hardt Plains in the Upper Rhine Plain .

After the Second World War , the natural sand dune, which was around ten meters high at that time, was removed and used as building material.

At the beginning of the 1980s, the restoration of the Forlen Hump started as an ecological compensation measure for other projects. 10,000 tons of sand were piled up on an area of around 7,000 m² and modeled with heavy construction machinery.

Since the official completion in 1993, valuable sandy grass vegetation has developed on the nutrient-poor, dry subsoil, which is maintained with regular care. This is taken care of by the Association of Vogelfreunde Weiher , which has taken on the sponsorship of the biotope .

The Forlenbuckel is available to the population as a local recreation area.
