Molding material

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Molding materials , consisting of the basic molding material ( quartz , chromite , zirconium and other sands), binding agents ( clay , water glass , chemical binders) and, if necessary, additives (such as release agents , cryolite , etc.), are used for the production of original forms in metal foundries. After a preparation and / or mixing process in a sand mixer , a malleable, refractory substance is used to reproduce the casting mold, which must be discarded again after the casting has been formed. Depending on the type, size and material of the parts to be potted, a wide variety of molding material systems are used accordingly.

The assessment of molding materials is based on their molding and casting properties, as well as the recovery options for reuse. In order to guarantee the optimal properties in the foundries stable, a regular test of the molding material is carried out. The criteria for this are strength properties, thermal resistance and gas permeability.
