The Research Institute for Forest Ecology and Forestry (FAWF) of the State of Rhineland-Palatinate was founded in 1984 as a forestry research institute and has been based in Trippstadt Castle in Trippstadt since 1987 . In 2002 the research institute was renamed FAWF. It has 58 employees (as of February 2018), the head is Hans-Peter Erhardt. The superior authority is the Rhineland-Palatinate Ministry for the Environment, Energy, Food and Forests .

The general tasks are already determined by the name. In particular, these are research on the sustainable fulfillment of the forest function, safeguarding the environment, increasing economic benefits and improving the quality of life.
