The research journal Social Movements. Analyzes on Democracy and Civil Society is a quarterly academic journal with analyzes on democracy and civil society , published by Walter de Gruyter . Responsible editors are currently Ansgar Klein, Hans-Josef Legrand, Jan Rohwerder and Jochen Roose. The journal was founded in 1988 under the name Research Journal New Social Movements .

Content of the journal

The research journal Social Movements publishes themed issues four times a year. Contrary to what the main title suggests, not only topics related to social movements are covered, but also topics from the fields of civil society (especially engagement), democracy and parties. Typical for the main topics is a mixture of contributions from science and contributions from practitioners who are active in political work in the respective field.

In addition to the main topic, the booklets also include various categories: current analysis / essay, pulse rate (for conference reports, project presentations, brief analyzes and the like) and literature reviews. Some of the booklets have been supplemented with additional special focal points, which take up another topic more briefly. Additional articles can be found on the journal's homepage in the online section FJSBplus.

history

The research journal was founded in 1988, at that time still under the name Forschungsjournal Neue Sozialebewegung . The editorial of the first issue said:

"The aim of the magazine is to initiate, promote and perpetuate the exchange between research and politics, between movements and science, between movement activists and traditional political practice as well as reflection within these three areas."

In 2011 the title was changed to the research journal Social Movements. Analysis of Democracy and Civil Society . The research journal is produced by a volunteer editorial team that is not affiliated with a university or other institution. After initially two years of self-publishing and four years of collaboration with a Marburg publisher, the journal was published from 1994 to 1999 by Westdeutscher Verlag and from 2000 to 2015 by Lucius & Lucius , and since 2016 by Walter de Gruyter .
