A research seminar is a form of presentation of preliminary research results that is common in academic research. Usually universities and research institutions act as hosts, while an externally invited researcher presents a work that has not yet been published. Research seminars are common in all individual sciences , but are more common in the social sciences. Typically, the host institution is thanked in the acknowledgment of the later published scientific article .

In contrast to seminars , the focus is not on higher education, but on the exchange of ideas and criticism of the research presented. For this reason, research seminars are not aimed at students, but at other scientists from the host institutions.

meaning

Although the researchers present also learn of new, as yet unpublished research, the main purpose of a research seminar is the free exchange of ideas about the presented work. Research seminars therefore tend to increase the number of citations after publication and the likelihood of acceptance during the scientific peer review process. However, it is unclear whether the criticism of those present is useful to the author or whether the author improves his paper because of the seminar in order to look good in front of his colleagues. In fact, there are a number of publishers of scientific journals who explicitly encourage their colleagues to give presentations in research seminars.
