Forest runners

A timber rotor or Heide rotor was able designation for a forestry staff, who was responsible for monitoring extensive areas of forest. He was responsible for its safety and, if possible, also had to prevent illegal hunting or poaching or wood theft. The runners were subordinate to the forest rider or heather rider , who was, so to speak , the forest manager and was mounted. As sub-officials / sub-rangers , they had to make their observation on foot, that is, to run. In the case of Johann Heinrich Cotta , becoming a forester was the first step on the way to becoming a forest scientist .
