Fort de Veer

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Fort de Veer - or Veersche Schans in the Dutch original- was a fortification that the Dutch built in Elmina, Ghana between 1817 and 1829, about 800 meters west of Fort São Jorge da Mina on a narrow, elevated point on the Elmina peninsula in what is now the Bantoma districterected. The fortification was named after Jakobus de Veer , the Dutch general director of Elmina at the time. Today only traces of the facility are preserved; six corroded cannons and some iron parts of rifle carriers have been preserved.

The Veerssche Schans replaced the previous fortification Waakzamheid ("vigilance"), which should protect Elmina from attacks from this side. The Veersche Schans was, as the Dutch name suggests, a square stone jump , which was reached by ladders, with gun holes for muskets and artillery .
