Forte de Sao Francisco Xavier

The Forte de São Francisco Xavier is a fort near Porto on the Atlantic coast between the mouths of the Douro and the Rio Leça. It is also called Castelo do Queijo ( Cheese Castle ). This name refers to the shape of the granite blocks of the rocky coast from which it was built, and which, as a result of weathering, have become rounded pillows or wheels of cheese. The fort dates from the middle of the 17th century and was built on the remains of an older complex. It has been registered as a monument since 1934 and can be visited.
