The apnea of prematurity is also called "primary sleep apnea in infancy" or the Anglizismus apparent life-threatening events (ALTE, acute life-threatening event hereinafter), and is a life-threatening event .

OLD occurs in infancy and is characterized by sudden and unexpected onset

  • respiratory arrest ( apnea )
  • Lifelessness and the resulting
  • Pallor or (later) cyanosis

This condition can often be broken with stimulation of the infant. Regardless of whether this brings the desired success or not, (emergency) medical help must be sought as soon as possible .

Causal disease states must be excluded from the differential diagnosis. These include, for example, seizures in the context of epilepsy or cardiac arrhythmias such as QT syndrome .

OLD is considered to be a risk factor for sudden infant death .
