Fra Fra Sound

Fra Fra Sound is a multinational fusion band of predominantly Surinamese musicians, which has existed in the Netherlands since 1980. With a brass section, they have occasionally formed the Fra Fra Big Band since 1990 .

history

Under the guidance of Vincent Henar, some young Surinamans from the Bijlmermeer district in Amsterdam begin to make music. They appear in public for the first time at the 1981 Kwakoefestival in the neighborhood . The band name comes from the Surinamese term Fra Fra , which means balance between different elements. The band reached next modal jazz various traditional percussion traditions from Suriname to: dance music Kaseko well as ritual music ( Winti ) and light music ( Kawina ).

In April 1983 the band took part in the preliminary round of the first Grote Prijs van Nederland , but did not reach the final; a first maxi single was released. Fra Fra Sound toured not only in the Netherlands and Suriname since 1989, but also in Great Britain, later in Germany, Belgium, France, Mali, South Africa, North America, Cuba, Brazil and the Netherlands Antilles . For the tenth anniversary of the ensemble, it was expanded for the first time to form a big band led by trumpeter Charles Green; Benny Bailey also played for Green at times . In 1998 Lester Bowie appeared as a guest soloist with Fra Fra Sound . In 2015 the band celebrated their 35th anniversary in a concert with Andy Narell .
