François Raguenet
François Raguenet (* after 1660 in Rouen , † 1722 in Paris ) was a French historian and musicologist.
Life
According to his family's wishes, Raguenet was to become a priest and was therefore chosen by Cardinal de Bouillon to be the master of his nephew.
In 1698 Raguenet accompanied the cardinal to Rome . During his two-year stay there, he became enthusiastic about Italian music. He dealt extensively with the works of André Campras and Jean-Baptiste Lully and also wrote a paper about them.
In the autumn of 1700 Raguenet returned to France and settled in Paris. Together with his colleague Jean-Laurent Le Cerf de La Viéville (1674–1707) he helped establish Italian music in France. This "new" style was discussed controversially and ultimately led to the Buffonist dispute in 1752–54 .
Raguenet died in Paris in 1722 at the age of about 60, where he found his final resting place.
