Francis Cotes
Francis Cotes RA (* around 1725 in London ; † July 20, 1770 ibid) was an English painter and is considered a pioneer of pastel painting . In 1768 he was one of the founding members of the Royal Academy of Arts .
Life
Cotes was a student of the painter George Knapton . But it was not until he was over forty that Cotes was able to debut at an exhibition of the Society of Artists . In the years 1760 to 1761 he made the oil paintings The nut-brown maid and Half length of Mr. Paul , with which he also found recognition in the Society.
During the summer months, Cotes also worked in Bath for some years . There he often worked as a portrait enameller .
After the death of his first wife, he married Sarah Shepherd for the second time . This should also have worked as a painter. Francis Cotes died in London on July 20, 1770 at the age of about 45.
