Francisco Louçã

Francisco Anacleto Louçã (born November 12, 1956 , in Lisbon , Portugal ) is a Portuguese economist and politician of the Bloco de Esquerda (left bloc) and member of parliament (Assembleia da República) . He is one of the founders of the party.

Political career

In the 1970s he was active in the student resistance movement against the fascist dictatorship ( Estado Novo ) in Portugal and imprisoned for a short time. In 1973 he joined the Trotskyist League Comunista Internationalista (LCI). After the Carnation Revolution , the Partido Socialista Revolucionário (PSR) emerged in 1979 from a merger of the LCI and the Trotskyist Partido Revolucionário dos Trabalhadores (PRT ). The Bloco de Esquerda was formed in 1999 from the merger with other left-wing parties. In 1999 he was elected member of parliament for the first time. He was re-elected in the following parliamentary elections in 2002 and 2005. In the discussion about the Treaty establishing a Constitution for Europe , he spoke out against the proposed draft.

In 2006 he unsuccessfully applied for the office of President (5.3% of the vote).

Louçã was the founding chairman of Bloco and chaired it until November 11, 2012. In 2012 he no longer applied for this post, his successors are Catarina Martins and João Semedo .

Scientific career

Francisco Louçã is Professor at the Institute of Economics at the Technical University of Lisbon ( Instituto Superior de Economia e Gestão , ISEG). He was visiting professor in Germany, Switzerland and the USA and is a member of the American Association of Economists .

He is also active as a freelance author for various publications.
