life and work
family
Francisco de Colonia came from a family of architects and sculptors who emigrated from Cologne to northern Spain in the 15th century - his grandfather was Johannes von Köln (around 1410–1480), his father was Simon von Köln (around 1455–1511).

Together with his father he worked on the New Cathedral of Salamanca and on the unfinished new construction of the Cathedral of Plasencia . His first independent work was possibly the plateresque back wall of the main altar (retablo) of the church of San Nicolas de Bari in Burgos. The south portal of the Church of Villahoz is also attributed to him. In 1516, Juan Rodríguez de Fonseca , the then Bishop of Burgos , commissioned him to redesign a portal (Puerta de la Pellejería) at the Cathedral of Burgos . The older of the two cimborries of the cathedral was also designed and completed by him; after its collapse he still worked on the new building.
