Frank Lee Morris (born September 1, 1926 ; † unknown, missing June 11, 1962; death uncertain, suspected June 12, 1962 and October 2005) was an American criminal who escaped from the notorious Alcatraz prison and never did was seen again.

Live and act

Morris is said to have had an IQ of 133. In the course of his life he was convicted of drug trafficking and armed robbery, among other things, and in 1960 he was taken to Alcatraz Island, a prison off San Francisco , from which he attempted an escape in 1962. Together with the two brothers John and Clarence Anglin , he dug his way through the old walls of a ventilation shaft. Together they finally got outside via the cell block and then disappeared in a rubber dinghy they had made from raincoats. Their disappearance was only noticed the next morning, when the fugitives were already more than nine hours ahead.

It is believed that Morris and the Anglin brothers drowned while trying to escape; however, the bodies were never found. However, some recent evidence suggests that Morris and the Anglin brothers may have managed to escape. Later attempts to escape have shown that one can swim ashore from Alcatraz.

Frank Morris and the brothers John and Clarence Anglin are still on the list of the most wanted criminals in Northern California (Northern California Most Wanted). The pictures they showed there were artificially aged by the FBI and show what they might look like today.

Morris' story served as a template for the film Escape from Alcatraz, starring Clint Eastwood .
