history

The Frankenberg memorial in 1896

On the path north of the park pond, Duke Friedrich IV of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg had a monument erected in 1816 in memory of Minister Sylvius Freiherr von Frankenberg (1728–1815).

Frankenberg was a real secret council in the Gotha council from 1765 and was minister of state from 1788. In 1803, Frankenberg donated the largest part to the construction of the so-called Frankenberg Hospital. This existed until 1879 at Grosse Fahnenstrasse 18. Minister Frankenberg lived in his own house "Zur gute Schmiede" ("Gustav-Freytag-Wohnhaus") in Gotha-Siebleben. The monument was erected in the Greek style and bore the inscription: "Dem Dedicated to the unforgettable Sylvius. ”At the moment the monument is being restored with funds from the Gotha Cultural Foundation, but will be put back in its old location in 2012.
