Germania was founded in 1869, the boathouse was a two-story building with a classicist facade on the museum bank right next to the Städel . In 1882 the Germania rower Achilles Wild became the first German champion in the single . In 1883 the club was involved in founding the German Rowing Association . In the 20th century Germania rowers were able to win numerous titles at national and international level. With around 600 members, Germania is one of the largest rowing clubs in Germany.

The club is traditionally frequented by the Frankfurt upper class. So included Wilhelm Merton , Johann Philipp Holzmann and Franz Oppenheimer among its members. The lawyer and manager Walther von Wietzlow was chairman until his death on October 18, 2017 . In 2002, the association used donations to finance an extensive modernization and expansion of the prestigious boathouse right next to the Städel in Frankfurt.

A collaboration with Dresdner Bank has existed since the 1970s . Commerzbank now rents the premises on the first floor of the boathouse and leases the catering there for its employees and association members.

The Frankfurt rowing company Germania has always been one of the most successful rowing clubs in the region. In the meantime, Germania has become increasingly involved in the training of talented rowers. Thanks to the close cooperation with the school rowing center, great success has been achieved in the junior area in recent years. Among other things, the 2010 Peter Velten Memorial Prize of the German Rowing Association was awarded for the best young talent in the association. The Frankfurt rowing society Germania is a base association of the federal youth base in Frankfurt / Mainz.
