František Smetana

František Smetana (born May 8, 1914 in Ohnišťany ; † November 25, 2004 in Prague ) was a Czech cellist and music teacher.

Smetana first took violin lessons before switching to the cello at the age of ten. He studied at the Prague Conservatory and at the École Normale de Musique de Paris . In addition to performing as a soloist, he worked regularly with the pianist Dolly Urbánkova , who became his wife in 1940. He also played in several chamber music formations such as the Czech Nonet , the Smetana Trio , the Prague Trio and the Czechoslovak Quartet .

In 1948 Smetana was sentenced to one year in prison for contact with Western diplomats. In the early 1960s he left Czechoslovakia and accepted an invitation from the Jamaican government, and in 1966 he went to the USA, where he worked as a university professor. He only returned to his homeland in the 1990s.
