history

Interior of the cathedral

Construction of the church began in 1687 as part of the Jesuit monastery. The baroque-style building was consecrated to St. Francis Xavier in 1705 . After the abolition of the Jesuit order in 1773, the church became a parish church. The church survived various wars such as World War II without substantial damage.

In 1960 the church was officially closed to public services. The communist authorities tried to convert the building into a museum or a concert hall. Even so, people went to church every Sunday for common prayer, songs and the rosary. Services resumed in 1987. In 1990 the church was given the title of minor basilica , and a year later it became the cathedral of the Diocese of Hrodna.
