Franz Gruber (politician, 1888)

Franz Gruber (born March 10, 1888 in Steinakirchen am Forst ; † March 2, 1949 ) was an Austrian politician ( SPÖ ) and foreman. Gruber was a member of the Lower Austrian state parliament from 1945 to 1949 .

Life

Gruber completed an apprenticeship as a machine fitter and was arrested for his political involvement. He then worked in Germany and South America and joined the army in Argentina. He was promoted to first lieutenant and fought on the side of Austria during the First World War from 1914 to 1917. He was involved in the Social Democratic Workers' Party and was district party secretary from 1927 to 1933 and mayor of Mauer bei Amstetten from 1929 to 1933. In 1934 he was arrested after the outbreak of the Austrian Civil War, and later he was imprisoned several times for political reasons. In 1945 he was deported to Mauthausen concentration camp.

Gruber was District Captain of Amstetten for a short time in 1945 and was sworn in as a member of the Lower Austrian Landtag on December 12, 1945. On July 13, 1946, he and his daughter were arrested by the Soviet occupying forces and subsequently sentenced to 10 years in prison with her for espionage. Gruber died in custody of complications from a gallbladder operation, while his daughter was released from prison in 1953. In spite of his absence, Gruber's mandate was not passed on until the end of the legislative period.
