The Franciscan Monastery was a convent of the Franciscan in Zeitz in today's Saxony-Anhalt . It existed from the 13th to the 16th centuries.

location

The monastery complex is located in the south of the medieval city on the former city wall, as it corresponded to the location and construction of numerous Franciscan monasteries in the medieval cities of the 13th century. It is one of the best preserved complexes of its kind in Saxony-Anhalt.

history

The exact year of foundation is not known. When Bishop Engelhard von Naumburg generally recommended the brothers of the Franciscan Order, founded in Italy in 1210, in a pastoral letter in 1238 , the monastery probably did not yet exist. The Franciscans first settled in Germany in 1221; the Saxon Franciscan Province ( Saxonia ), to which the branch in Zeitz belonged, already had 44 monasteries in the middle of the 13th century. The abbey church in Zeitz was built around 1250 according to historical building knowledge. It is a building in the style of a mendicant church . It was first mentioned in 1266 by a papal legate.

In 1517 28 Franciscans lived in the monastery. In 1541 it was dissolved by the Saxon Duke Moritz as a result of the Reformation .

Further use

In 1542 Martin Luther preached in the former monastery church. A Latin school was housed in the monastery buildings since 1564. The Zeitz Abbey Library has been located here since 1843. During the GDR era, the area was used by a polytechnic high school.

Since 2007 the facility has been extensively renovated by the city of Zeitz and has since been used as a concert church. The move into a Protestant elementary school is currently planned.
