The women's prison Freetown ( english Freetown Female Correctional Center ) is the central prison for women in West Africa Sierra Leone . It is operated by Sierra Leone Correctional Services .

The prison is considered the most modern prison in the country and is only one of two that are not characterized by massive overcrowding. The prison conditions for women are considered to be significantly better than those in prisons for men. There are no joint prisons nationwide (as of 2018). Around 90 women and their children were detained in 2018.

The civil aid organization AdvocAid mainly organizes training and further education as well as legal support .

history

The prison served as a pre-trial detention facility for the Special Court for Sierra Leone from 2003 to 2006 . In 2009 this was handed over to the Sierra Leonean state and has been used as a women's prison since May 2010. From 2012, five cells of the detention center for up to two years were for the enforcement of regulations means used against involved in the main processes of the Special Court people.
