Fredericksburg National Cemetery
The Fredericksburg National Cemetery is a National Cemetery of the United States in Fredericksburg in the State of Virginia . It is part of the Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park and is administered with this by the National Park Service .
history
The Civil War cemetery was designated a national cemetery by the US Congress in 1865 ; 15,243 soldiers of the Union Army are buried here. The identity of only about 20% (2,473 dead) is known, about 80% were buried as unknown . About 100 victims of the wars of the 20th century and a few wives of those already buried here were also buried in Fredericksburg National Cemetery. In the 1940s, the cemetery was closed to further burials. Most of the dead come from the following battles:
- Battle of Fredericksburg , December 11-15, 1862
- Battle of Chancellorsville , May 1-4, 1863
- Battle of the Wilderness , May 5th and 6th, 1864
- Battle of Spotsylvania Court House , May 8-21, 1864
The cemetery is on Lafayette Boulevard and Sunken Road in Marye's Heights , which were part of the Fredericksburg battles. Every year on Memorial Day , local boy scouts , in collaboration with the National Park Service, place candles at all graves.
Nearby and also part of the Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park is the Fredericksburg Confederate Cemetery . Around 3,300 victims of the Civil War on the side of the Confederate States Army are buried here.
