FreeHAL is an independently learning dialogue program .

designation

Initially, the program was named JEliza based on the conversation simulator called ELIZA by Joseph Weizenbaum . The J stood for Java , the programming language in which the program was initially designed. At the beginning of May 2008 it was renamed from JEliza to FreeHAL, as the previous name no longer matched the programming languages now used. Since then, the name is based on the fictional computer of the spaceship Discovery in the 2001 film : A Space Odyssey .

functionality

FreeHAL uses a semantic network and also works with pattern recognition , caulking , part of speech databases and hidden Markov models in order to imitate the most human behavior possible in conversations.

FreeHAL learns independently. The program expands its knowledge database by communicating via the keyboard . It supports the languages German and English, although so far an extensive database is only available as a semantic network for German .
