FreeWRT was a Linux distribution that was used in embedded systems such as WLAN devices from Linksys and Asus . It was a spin-off from the OpenWrt project. FreeWRT is no longer being developed.
The project bears the same name as another, now discontinued Russian project that copied the Sveasoft firmware and made it freely accessible.
aims
The FreeWRT project had slightly different goals than the OpenWrt project. The aim of the FreeWRT developers was to orient the distribution towards professional use in the corporate environment. The fork of the OpenWrt project was created to take into account the respective interests and abilities of the FreeWrt developers and because a corresponding solution within OpenWrt was not possible from their point of view. Since two of the initiators were BSD users or developers, the switch to a build system that was similar to BSD ports had high priority.
The developers devoted themselves to comparatively few models, including a. They specialized in supporting the models of the Linksys WRT54G (L / S / 3G), Asus WL500g (Deluxe / Premium) and Netgear WGT634u product families, but these models were supported more comprehensively. Another goal of the project was to regularly publish stable versions that support current, well-equipped hardware. The professional concept also included maintaining contact with the hardware manufacturers in order to influence product development there.
history
Since Linksys uses and modifies Linux , which is freely available in the source code under the GNU General Public License, for their router , there was also an obligation under this license to release the firmware freely again. This made it possible to modify the router's operating system , further develop it and publish it as OpenWrt / FreeWRT.
particularities
The FreeWRT distribution allowed handling that is typical for Linux systems. This means that functions not intended by the manufacturer can also be used on WLAN devices. The configuration was done via SSH . Through a cooperation with the Tntnet project, the first concepts for a modular and efficient web interface were completed. In the version FreeWRT 1.1 there should be the first approaches for web interface frameworks (C ++ / PHP).
On the project homepage it was also possible to build an individual software configuration online, which was then automatically created and offered as a package for download.
