history

Cricket has been played in Orange Free State since the 1850s. The Bloemfontein Cricket Club was founded in 1855. From the 1903/04 season , Orange Free State took part in the Currie Cup . However, it did not succeed for a long time. In 1926/27 it was awarded second place for the first time. In the division into two divisions in the 1951/52 season , the team initially found itself in the lower division, but could immediately decide for itself and advance. The high phase of the team was at the beginning of the 1990s. It started by winning the Benson and Hedges Series in 1988/89 , the team's first competitive win. 1991/92 won the Nissan Shield . In the following season, in addition to the third win of a List A trophy, the Total Power Series , the first win at the Currie Cup. This win could be repeated in the following season , this time parallel to winning the Benson and Hedges Series . Winning the Benson and Hedges Series was repeated over the next two seasons. In 1997/98 the Currie Cup was won for the third and last time. In the 2003/04 season, the provincial teams were merged and Free State formed together with Griqualand West, who fought against the merger, the Eagles. In the following years the team succeeded in winning multiple wins in the first-class and List-A competitions of the now semi-professional provincial teams.

From its inception until 1986, the team played mainly at the Ramblers Cricket Club Ground in Bloemfontein. After a transition phase, the Mangaung Oval has been the home of the team since 1989 .
