Freedom Forum

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Freedom Forum was founded in 1991 when the Gannett Foundation, established as a charitable trust by publisher Frank E. Gannett , sold the name and assets back to the Gannett Company for $ 670 million . The aim of the original foundation was to support the communities within the scope of the newspaper. The retired executive and founder of USA Today , Al Neuharth , took over the money and the company name and founded the "Freedom Forum". Its mission is to promote free press, free speech and free thought.

The forum includes the First Amendment Center, the Newseum Institute, and the Religious Freedom Center at Vanderbilt University in Nashville , Tennessee . The Freedom Forum is the parent company of the Newseum , a museum devoted to the history of the news media. It first opened in Rosslyn in 1997 and reopened in Washington, DC in 2008 .

On May 31, 2011, James C. Duff became President and Chief Executive Officer.

Neuharth's daughter, Jan A. Neuharth is the managing director and board member of the Freedom Forum. The financial losses of the Newseum were controversial from the start, which also led to criticism of the allegedly too high salaries and to proposals, which were considered risky, to rehabilitate the finances.
