Freeboard deck

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The freeboard deck , also the survey deck , is usually the topmost continuous deck on a ship , which has fixed locking devices for all openings in its exposed part.

details

At the request of the shipowner , with the approval of the classification society and the responsible shipping authority, a lower deck can be designated as the freeboard deck, provided that it is a complete, continuous and solid deck. If a deeper, watertight deck is designated as the freeboard deck, the freeboard of the ship is calculated from this deck .

All parts located above the freeboard deck must have opening flaps (lockable) on the sides that are accessible to seawater, then they are considered to be ship superstructures. These types of ships (so-called interchangeable ships) are no longer built nowadays because they no longer meet safety regulations. Ships in which the building regulations with regard to a very low freeboard deck as well as other measures for the construction of a small measured ship with a large loading capacity have been exhausted as far as possible, are also called paragraph ships .

The location and marking of the freeboard deck is noted in the International Load Line Certificate.
