from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Free German University was an institution in exile that was founded on November 19, 1935 in Paris (France). One of the founders was Johann Lorenz Schmidt , Anna Seghers' husband . The teaching at this school followed the ideological guidelines of the Popular Front policy.

Schmidt held lectures on the foundations of historical and dialectical materialism and on National Socialism and its ideology. There were also individual lectures on questions of politics, economy and culture. French language courses were also held.

There was a close collaboration with the Parisian German Adult Education Center (in exile), whose initiators also included Schmidt.

When German troops marched into France in 1940, the activities of both schools ended.
