Foreign psychology

The concept of the alien psychic is used in social-philosophical contexts, in epistemology and in the philosophy of mind . Max Scheler used the term to denote the experiences of others, which, in his opinion, can be read directly on the face.

In the Vienna Circle in particular , the view was expressed that the psychic of others cannot be the subject of empirical sciences because the experiences of another individual cannot be perceived directly and therefore cannot be verified. One of the implications of epistemological solipsism is the fundamental unknowability of the alien psychic; the ontological solipsism even denies its existence .

In the philosophy of mind, the question of the consciousness of others is discussed in particular as a quality problem and as a problem of intentionality . A major impetus for this comes from Thomas Nagel , who discussed the question of how it would feel to feel like a bat. With this essay, he turned against reductionist positions within the neurosciences because, from his point of view, the neural correlate of consciousness can be used to determine that certain feelings such as pain are present, but not how this pain feels in a third person. Access to one's own consciousness is only possible from the first-person perspective .
