Freecode

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Freecode ( called Freshmeat until October 2011 ) was an online service for application development and, according to its own information, the largest directory on the global network (English Web ), preferably in the Unix and cross-platform applications sector . The service was evaluated, looked after, revised and expanded by a network community . On June 18, 2014, the operator stopped active work on the website. The existing content should remain available in static form.

more details

About 56 percent (as of January 2006) of the applications registered with Freecode were subject to the provisions of the so-called GNU General Public License . However, the service was not limited to certain approvals ( licenses ), so that applications in the public domain or public - as so-called open source - and also as freeware , shareware and payware (from the English pay ware for “paid product”) were represented. One condition, however, was that the applications offered could run on Unix-like operating systems.

After registering on the service page, it was possible to be informed about news by means of daily messages (in the form of a newsletter ), or to actively discuss the applications via Internet Relay Chat or directly on the site.

The total number of registered enterprises development or project, (English projects ) amounted to over 43,000, and published so far nearly 217,000 applications. (As of December 2007)

The Freecode service has been operated by Dice Holdings since September 2012 .

After Eric S. Raymond called for a replacement, freshcode.club was created; Development companies or projects as well as published applications can be entered.
