Fresco cycle of the Church of St. Wolfgang
The cycle of frescoes in the church of St. Wolfgang in Hünenberg in the canton of Zug describes the life and work of St. Wolfgang in two twelve fields . The pictures, painted using Secco technology , are integrated into the architecture of the church with gray lines.
history
The cycle was created by an unknown master in the second quarter of the 17th century. The wall paintings were rediscovered during the restoration of the Church of St. Wolfgang in 1909, but were covered again in the process. It was only during the restoration of the church between 1946 and 1949 that the cycle was exposed, restored and supplemented. It is in rather poor condition and has many defects. This was mainly because holes were made in the surface so that the plaster would adhere better than the pictures were covered. These pitfalls damaged some key parts of the cycle, so many additions had to be made. Due to a faulty restoration in 1949, extensive restoration had to be carried out again in 2009. The bump holes were filled with too coarse mortar and the retouching was done with non-reversible colors. It was also covered with a casein glaze at the end. However, the casein glaze created a very high surface tension and thus tore off the original color from the substrate. The additions from 1949 have also been separated more clearly. The additions are based on the Wolfgang cycle in the Saint-Loup chapel near Düdingen .
presentation
The story begins, in chronological order, with the top left picture on the north wall. The original tituli, i.e. the explanatory inscription, has been lost. Therefore, today's interpretation of the images is used, which is also based on the Wolfgang von Düdingen cycle.
