Peace Commissioner of the Evangelical Church in Germany

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The peace commissioner of the Evangelical Church in Germany is the organizational head of peace work at the EKD . The office was created in 2008 and the then secretary of the Bremen Evangelical Church , Pastor Renke Brahms , was elected as the first commissioner . The EKD peace commissioner therefore does not come from the circle of regional church peace commissioners.

tasks

The peace commissioner promotes and coordinates the work of the regional church peace commissioners and various organizations and institutions in the field of peace and development work. He calls the actors together for the annual conference of peace work in the EKD.

The peace commissioner is to coordinate the contents of the EKD peace memorandum “Live from God's peace - ensure just peace” from 2007 within the church. He works closely with the Evangelical Working Group on Conscientious Objection and Peace (EAK) and the Working Group Service for Peace (AGDF).

Renke Brahms

Renke Brahms has been the EKD's first peace commissioner since October 1st, 2008. Renke Brahms is also on the advisory board for evangelical pastoral care in the Bundeswehr .

Positions

The peace commissioner has repeatedly taken a position on behalf of the EKD on violent conflicts.

  • In 2011, on the war in Libya, Brahms said that “there is no just war, but only just peace.” He referred to the EKD's position in the memorandum: “Live from God's peace - ensure just peace” . However, this is based on the conviction that internationally valid law must also be enforced. “Within the framework of narrow criteria, this can in exceptional cases also include the use of law-preserving force. However, I do not see these criteria being met in the case of Libya. "
